SOUTH CAROLINA SAFETY REMINDERS

TORNADO WARNING

  • β€’ Go to the lowest floor of a sturdy building immediately
  • β€’ Get to an interior room away from windows β€” a bathroom or closet
  • β€’ Cover your head and neck with your arms
  • β€’ Never shelter under a highway overpass
  • β€’ If outside with no shelter, lie flat in a low ditch

THUNDERSTORM / LIGHTNING

  • β€’ When thunder roars, go indoors β€” SC leads the Southeast in lightning deaths
  • β€’ Stay inside for 30 minutes after the last thunder clap
  • β€’ Avoid tall trees, open fields, and bodies of water
  • β€’ Stay off corded phones and away from plumbing
  • β€’ Unplug electronics before the storm arrives

FLOODING

  • β€’ Turn Around, Don't Drown β€” 6 inches of water can knock you down
  • β€’ 12 inches of moving water can carry away a small vehicle
  • β€’ Never drive around road closed barricades
  • β€’ Move to higher ground before water rises β€” don't wait
  • β€’ Avoid walking in moving floodwater

HURRICANE / TROPICAL STORM

  • β€’ Follow evacuation orders immediately β€” do not wait
  • β€’ SC coast can see storm surge of 10+ feet in a major hurricane
  • β€’ Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit before the season
  • β€’ The eye passing over does not mean the storm is over
  • β€’ Stay off roads until officials declare them safe

EXTREME HEAT

  • β€’ SC summers regularly push heat indices above 105Β°F
  • β€’ Drink water every 15–20 minutes when working outdoors
  • β€’ Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle
  • β€’ Check on elderly neighbors during heat advisories
  • β€’ Know the signs of heat stroke: hot dry skin, confusion, no sweating

WINTER WEATHER / ICE

  • β€’ SC roads ice quickly β€” bridges and overpasses freeze first
  • β€’ Even a thin glaze of ice makes roads extremely dangerous
  • β€’ Stock up on supplies before the storm β€” stores empty fast
  • β€’ Keep pipes dripping during hard freezes to prevent bursting
  • β€’ Never use a generator, grill, or camp stove indoors
